Herbal Supplements May Pose Health Risk

In a new federal report released May 26th, 2010 by the Government Accountability Office, evidence of the dangers of food supplements is finally brought to light.

According to the report, AOL News natural supplements, now taken by at least a quarter of adult Americans, often contain trace amounts of lead, mercury, arsenic and potentially dangerous levels of pesticides.

This report comes out just in time for a key Senate hearing, set to begin in two weeks, that will decide whether to approve a food safety bill that could clamp down on regulation of such products.

Investigators tested 40 herbal supplements. Of those, 37 contained trace amounts of heavy metals, especially lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic. The content wasn't enough to exceed safety limits, but it does raise questions about the sterility of the supplement ingredients and the plants where they're produced.

"Consuming high levels of the contaminants for which we tested the 40 products can lead to severe health consequences, such as increased risk of cancer," the report reads, adding that the toxicity depends largely on one's dosage and individual health.

Sixteen of the supplements contained elevated levels of pesticides. Most of those chemicals aren't capped by legal restrictions because of insufficient scientific evidence about their risk to humans.

DON'T STOP READING HERE!

Now I'm not just talking about any and all supplements. The risky supplements I've warned my patients about for years are the cheap ones you find at Costco, Walgreens, and your supermarket. I've been carrying vitamin supplements in my office for 15 years and we only buy from manufacturers that can guarantee purity and also potency. The source of the supplement is key. Our manufacturers use sources from clean waters where the fish don't have mercury, land where the plants don't have pesticides, and they NEVER contain any coloring, sugar, or other artificial additives.

The reason for taking supplements is to improve your health. Don't risk damaging your health by purchasing the cheapest supplement you can find. You wouldn't apply this in other areas of your life and your health is by far the most important.

Our line of supplements includes multi vitamins, joint formulas, and some key nutrients to help control inflammation, sleep difficulties, cardiac health, intestinal health, allergies, and natural immunity particularly against colds and flu. We pride ourselves on providing only the safest products to our patients.

Is chocolate causing depression or are people eating chocolate because they feel depressed?

In this article by Susan Brady (http://www.healthnews.com/family-health/mental-health/how-can-chocolate-be-linked-to-depression-4211.html), she cites recent research done a UC Davis and UC San Diego suggesting that people who eat a lot of chocolate may be causing themselves to become depressed.

How Can Chocolate Be Linked to Depression?

By Susan Brady
Published: Tuesday, 27 April 2010

"Depressed mood was significantly related to higher chocolate consumption," Dr. Natalie Rose of the University of California, Davis, and University of California, San Diego, and colleagues wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Because the UC Davis and UC San Diego researchers were screening for general dietary intake, they could rule out caffeine, fats, and carbohydrates as possible factors in the depression

Antidepressant Use Rises Among Americans

The cost of medication for depression is staggering. It not only takes a HUGE toll on the American wallet but it can alter personalities and it poses an unacceptable health risk including homicide and suicide. We continue to be brainwashed by the pharmaceutical companies. Back in the 1960s cigarette ads were banned from TV. It's time for the same ruling on these drugs. You know that TV commercial with the sexy girl giving free cigarette samples? Their tag line is that it's time we see the tobacco companies free samples for what they really are. Well, the drug pushers in the pharmaceutical industry are even worse. The small excerpt from Susan Brady's article below says it all.

Antidepressant Use Rises Among Americans

By Susan Brady
Published: Tuesday, 1 June 2010

Consumer Reports stated that their “survey shows that a combination of therapy and medication works best <for depression>,” however the marketing push by pharmaceutical companies has won over customers. That marketing push cost $300 million in 2009 for just Cymbalta and Pristiq alone. Television ads, print ads, discount coupons, free samples for doctors to dispense—these two drugs are known in most households in America whether they use them or not.

Funny yet not. This IS the truth about drug company marketing!

Want to feel better, look better and actually BE better by summer?

·         Remove trans fats from your diet- or at least minimize them.  They are mostly found in commercially baked foods and processed foods.

·         Increase water intake.  The recommendation is to take your body weight in pounds (lbs.) and drink half that amount in ounces.  (Example: a 150 pound person is to drink 75 ounces.)

·         Increase the amount of raw fruits and vegetables in your daily diet.  This will help with digestion and proper function of your GI tract. Try some new things to find your new favorites.

·         Reduce the amount of snack foods- chips, candy, soda, ice cream, cookies, cakes, etc.  Don’t worry- I didn’t say remove, I said reduce.

·         Think about posture.  Improving posture can improve almost all body functions and decreases the chance of injury.

·         Get physically active.  Start easy.  Walking is a great exercise to begin with.  Try to avoid high impact activities until you can build up to them.

·         Stretch every day.  Don’t overdo this one.  Just stretch until you can feel a little pull in the muscle.  It’s best to do this after warming up- after activity or just out of the shower.

·         Do something that challenges you mentally on a daily basis.  Sudoku, crossword puzzles, computer games, learning a new language.  Make it fun.

·         Take time for yourself.  Spend 15 to 30 minutes a day doing something for you.  It can be something from this list or anything else you decide.  Just be sure to do it for yourself.

By beginning to implement these things into (or out of) your life you will enhance your own wellness and enjoy the benefits of a happier and healthier lifestyle.

A few things you may not have known

The word “chiropractic” is taken from Greek, and means “done by hand”.

To date, much research has been done and much material published on the benefits and cost-effective nature of chiropractic treatment.

The number of Americans who seek chiropractic care has more than tripled in the last ten years, and continues to grow each year.

It is widely known by those who have visited a chiropractic doctor that the philosophy works, your body feels better, it heals better, and you are not cut, drugged, and off from work for 6 weeks to recuperate.

Dr. Meyer as a chiropractor believes in and practices the whole body approach to healing. Symptoms only tell us a small bit about what's happening with our health. If we choose only to alleviate the symptom or treat it as best we can, we are ignoring an opportunity to understand and improve our health as a whole.

For all my pregnant patients and non-patients

I have been providing safe and effective care for pregnant women for many years as have many other chiropractors. When we think for just a minute about the health benefits we derive from adjustments at any age, it's not hard to understand why they can be SO valuable when another living being is developing inside your body. A compromised nervous system causes or allows errors and problems to arise. If there were ever a time to do everything in our power to prevent that, these nine months certainly qualify. The following article refers only to pain experienced during pregnancy, not the myriad of other health benefits produced by chiropractic care. Pain is certainly a motivator to seek chiro care, is unquestionably unpleasant, and can cause its own set of problems. For these reasons, I wanted to share the article.     -Harris Meyer, DC

Pregnancy, Back Pain & Chiropractic

By
Mark Studin DC, FASBE (C), DAAPM, DAAMLP

Back pain during pregnancy can be significant in terms of intensity and resulting disability. One study found that 35.5% of woman had at least moderate to severe back pain during 1 or more of their pregnancies. The pain scales of the pregnant woman (on the Owestry rating scale of 0-10, where 0 is no pain and 10 is the worst pain imaginable) ranged from 5.86 to 9.21. [1]

One of the problems with patients not seeking care during pregnancy is this can become a long-term chronic condition and inherently more difficult to resolve.

One such study of concluded a retrospective review of 179 pregnant woman in 5 clinics regarding back pain during pregnancy and labor found that 85% reported relief of their low back pain as a direct result of chiropractic care. In an unrelated study, 25% had complete remission of their back pain, 50% reported feeling very well and 15% were feeling better. Only 10% reported no changes.[2]

The average pain scale prior to chiropractic care was 7.58 and post chiropractic care was 4.25 in one study. A second study revealed the average pain scale before chiropractic care 5.9 and post chiropractic care 1.5 out of 10 on the Owestry scale.

This author, having practiced chiropractic for 30 years and cared for 100’s of pregnant patients during that time has had similar results in the clinical setting. The primary reason those pregnant patients to seek chiropractic care have been that it is a drugless approach and it works. Beyond that, pregnant patients need not spend 9 months in pain so they can enjoy an active pregnancy and get the exercise needed to have a healthy full-term labor and delivery.

This study along with many others concludes that a drug-free approach of chiropractic care is one of the best solutions for pregnant patients with back pain.

Fibromyalgia Sufferers May Not Know This

Fibromyalgia & Chiropractic Care

Do you wake up feeling tired, washed out, and dragged down?  Do you have generalized pain throughout your body that doesn’t seem to respond to anything you’ve tried?  Do you wake up multiple times a night and fight getting back to sleep?  These are classic symptoms of fibromyalgia (FM). However, when caught early and treated appropriately, FM can resolve or at least be controlled.  Chiropractic care and management of FM is very effective and is becoming increasingly popular among FM sufferers.  The goal of managing FM is to return you to a productive, enjoyable lifestyle allowing you to function and perform all of your desired activities.

Chiropractic care is the most popular and sought after form of alternative care or complementary medicine as 20% of American men and women utilize chiropractic care at some point in their lives.  Of all the health care options, few have been found to be as satisfying to their patients as chiropractic with 80% of those seeking chiropractic treatment reporting significant pain relief, better functioning and an increased sense of wellbeing.  Still, many ask questions such as, what is the science behind chiropractic and, what exactly does a chiropractor do?

The original hypothesis or theory of chiropractic that led to its founding in 1895 is that skeletal or bone misalignments cause nerve interference resulting in pain, loss of function, and a host of other symptoms related to the nervous system.  The entire body is connected through bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, with their supporting circulatory or blood flow system and nervous system.  When the skeletal structure is in good alignment, the body can handle the many stresses and challenges we all face on a daily basis.  When there is a breakdown in this system, symptoms manifest and when left untreated, these symptoms can develop into chronic pain, including conditions such as fibromyalgia. Chiropractors focus on correcting the imbalances in the skeletal system which reduced problems with how the nervous system functions. The result: reduced or aleviated pain and other symptoms. But what happens if you take a pill or use another form of healthcare that doesn't get to the cause of the problem? That's right, it continues, often worsens, and the symptoms you can't stand return, persist, or also get worse.

Many of the techniques utilized in chiropractic care include manipulation of not only the bony structures, but also the muscles, tendons, and ligaments through various forms of manual or hands-on therapy, stretching, posture correction methods, exercise, lifestyle modification recommendations including diet and nutritional management, and activity modifications.  Chiropractic care also includes discussions and instructions for modifying methods of performing tasks including bending, lifting, pulling, pushing in both at work and home activities.  Work station modifications are also investigated, especially when symptoms are consistently worse during or after the work day.

Patients with fibromyalgia classically have generalized pain and tender spots throughout their body and often present with back pain, neck pain, headaches, as well as arm and/or leg pain.  Chiropractic care can effectively reduce the pain associated with FM by reducing bony misalignments, restoring muscle tone, and improving posture.  Proper exercise training has been found to be very important in maintaining long-term control of FM and is included in the management of FM.  Diet and nutritional counseling may also be beneficial.  Research has been very supportive of chiropractic care for patients suffering from FM.

We recognize the importance of including chiropractic in your treatment planning and realize you have a choice of providers. If you, a friend or family member requires care for FM, we sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence shown by choosing our services and look forward in serving you and your family presently and, in the future.

Teach Our Children

Health and wellness are subjects that many of us consider every day but that all of us should consider all day long. Both children and adults should be aware of their choices and the effect those choice will have on wellness. Getting kids started learning about wellness at a young age means the difference between enjoying good health or risking true misery in their adult years. Our role at Body Focus is to facilitate this learning with our very young chiropractic patients.

Countless people visit chiropractors when they have back or neck problems. If these same people don't learn about the total health benefits of chiropractic, they are losing out on so much potential to live a life of glowing health…and painfree as well. We aim to educate while we provide care so that people can learn about living well and how to reap the rewards.

There are so many aspects of our lives to consider when we tackle the topic of wellness. How we sleep, what and when we eat, how our thoughts effect us, our posture, medications we take, our exposure to pollution, our occupation, and the list goes on and on. So why do I mention this? Well we want to take these different contributors into account in determining how well someone is doing and what changes are necessary BUT, there is one unquestionable truth that is the whole reason a great chiropractor is important for everyone: everything your body does is controlled by your nervous system. That means your body's ability to deal with pollution, to get a restful sleep, to get nutrients from your diet, and every single other event that happens with your body is controlled by the nervous system. Only a chiropractor is trained to detect pressure on the nervous system that blocks it from doing its job completely and accurately. And only a chiropractor is trained and licensed to safely correct the problem resulting in that blockage. The point? You can't know if you have nervous system pressure because it usually does not cause pain or other symptoms. If you DO have any, than something or many things in your body are not functioning the way they need to. It is then impossible to have real wellness. We can be fooled by "feeling fine" into thinking we have total wellness but as I said, nervous system pressure and blockage usually doesn't cause any pain or symptoms so we don't know it exists.

If you begin saving money today at your current age, and your children start saving the same amount right now as well, who will have more when they turn 70? If you start working with an expert today on your health and so did your children, who is more likely to have greater wellness when they turn 70? Hmm. Please bring your children for a chiropractic check-up and find out if all is well or you need to start working on some changes. You can't put these things off and expect the same result as if you act right away.

Wishing you and your family the greatest of health. We would be honored to work with you on achieving that.  -Harris Meyer, DC

Why are so many people suffering?

I just read a discussion on WebMD of more than 40 people who've had spinal fusion surgeries and complained bitterly about how awful their lives are now. They thought their pain would be gone after the operations but they are MUCH WORSE. My chiro buddies and I are all too familiar with the success rates and more importantly failure rates of these surgeries which is why people weap with happiness when we're able to prevent their need for surgeries.

All these 40+ posts I read described the variety of most potent synthetic drugs these people are living on. They're not really living, it's some kind of sub-standard existance they have. You really should hear the stories to appreciate their despair.

Why are so many people suffering so terribly and not giving chiropractic a try? Its safety record is nearly spotless. Oh we've all heard the stories but very few are anything but concocted tales or urban legands. In 15 years I've never had an injury occur in my office, nor do I know a single other chiropractor who has…and believe me, I know a few chiros. This truth is borne out in our malpractice rates which are so low because we are almost never accused of injuring anyone. How can the primary doctors or surgeons live with themselves when they don't suggest chiropractic care to these people? Is their motivation to actually help people? I don't think leaving them in agonozing pain and drugged out qualifies as help. Perhaps the saddest part of this story is what has yet to be told or even experienced. The chronic pain, loss of normal life activities, constant dosing with drugs all cause the poor sufferers to progress in the negative direction along life's continuum. That leads to anything but a happy ending.

I LIKE HAPPY ENDINGS. I like finding out how I can help people improve their quality of life and overall health. I want to reach every one of those bloggers and show them how they might benefit from the safe and natural approach chiropractic has to offer them. If you know someone in that predicament, will you please have them contact my office? Let's do what we can to help those we know. Why would we let people suffer unnecessarily when there is a possible approach that could change their life?

Yours in health,

Cerebral Palsy helped With Chiropractic

Cerebral Palsy and Chiropractic, A Case Study of 2 Year Old Boy Being Helped

Published in the August 1, 2009 issue of the The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health is a study documenting the case of a 2 year old boy diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, and showing vast improvement under chiropractic care.

In this case, a mother brought her 2 year old adopted son into the chiropractors office in the hope that chiropractic care would help improve her son's mental and physical development. The young boy was diagnosed with hypotonic cerebral palsy as a result of traumatic birth, while his twin sister was diagnosed with spastic CP at the same time.

The young boy's history revealed that he had been hospitalized at about 3 months of age with acute respiratory failure due to complications of intubation. Shortly after, a tracheotomy was performed due to his inability to breathe on his own. While in the hospital, the boy began to have seizures approximately 8-10 times per day. He was placed on a number of medications, one of which he had a severe reaction to and he went into anaphylactic shock while in the hospital. His mother insisted on removing him from the hospital and weaned her son off of all seizure medication.

Results of the chiropractic examination revealed subluxations and a course of specific chiropractic adjustments was initiated. The chiropractic care had an immediate positive effect. After the first visit, the young boy's mother reported that her son had begun to pull himself up on his riding toys. By the fifth visit, the patient's mother further noted that her son had started sleeping 9-10 hours at night as compared to the 3-4 hours per night he was previously sleeping. The results in this case study also documented that the boy was able to begin walking without assistance and his fine motor skills as well as neurological state were improving. After 6 months of care, when this study was written, the child's vocal sounds still remained the same but he was able to make eye contact for longer periods of time.

In his conclusion, the author of the study wrote, "The theory of chiropractic deals with the understanding that if there is interference within the body, our body is unable to function at its maximal potential and therefore dis-ease can occur. Removing this interference through a chiropractic adjustment can increase a patient's health and body function. This is a case report of a child with cerebral palsy who underwent chiropractic care and in 8 visits experienced substantial lifestyle improvements."

GARLIC STRIKES AGAIN! This time against cancer!

I don't know of any doctor who loves the anti-vampire herb more than I do. I've told you all for years now about it's potent ability to fight colds and flu. The key is EARLY administration. You will have the best result if you use it immediately upon noticing symptoms or better yet, when you know or think you've been exposed.

We have seen in the research literature its benefit on cholesterol and cardiac health for many years as well. As you will see in the article below, researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel discovered its ability to actually kill cancer cells! As they note, much research is needed to exploit garlic's power in this situation but what great news!

One last thing before I let you read the short article picked up from Life Extension. The benefits from garlic are mostly ONLY FROM FRESHLY CRUSHED cloves. The chemical you need is called allicin and it completely breaks down in a matter of minutes once exposed to air. So crush and eat! I'm planning to make a video demonstrating just this so search me on You Tube soon and you should find it.

Garlic ingredient delivers death to cancer cells

The February 2005 issue of the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics (http://mct.aacrjournals.org/) published the discovery of researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel of a way to deliver allicin, a compound present in freshly crushed garlic, to cancer cells for their destruction. Allicin is formed by a reaction between the enzyme alliinase and alliin. The compound readily penetrates biological membranes to kill cancer cells, but the molecules are potent for only a short period of time, prompting the team to devise system for long term delivery.

The research team, led by Professor David Mirelman, attached alliinase to an antibody used in cancer treatment known as Rituximab, which marks tumors for destruction by the body's own immune system. When injected into mice implanted with human lymphoma cells, the drug bound itself to the target cancer cells. The researchers then injected alliin, which combined with the alliinase to form allicin on the cancerous cells' surface, resulting in the programmed cell death of almost all of the lymphoma cells within three days. A control group of mice who received Rituximab and alliinase alone experienced only a slight amount of cancer cell destruction.

Dr Mirelman calls the method "weaponizing" an antibody, because the antibody drug docks on the targeted cell and continuously reacts with the alliin molecules which are periodically injected. This allows a steady supply of allicin to reach the cancer cells and destroy them.

Dr Mirelman stated, "The medicinal value of garlic is no longer an ancient Chinese secret. Years of scientific research led to the identification and understanding of allicin's mode of activity and we are currently studying ways to target and deliver its toxic punch."

Surprising Article On Depression in Men

-Dr. Harris Meyer

Body Focus Health Center

I came across this article in the Health Tips Wordpress web blog. I cannot vouch for its accuracy but it certainly is an issue worth some thought and attention. Men, the alleged tougher of the human species doesn't always make their pain and weaknesses know. This article does not seem far fetched.

Depression in Men

Depression in men can affect sexual desire and performance. Men often are unwilling to admit to problems with their sexuality.Depression in men often goes unrecognized–by themselves, colleagues, family and even physicians. Yet some researchers estimate the depression rate among middle-aged men approaches 40%–considerably higher than the rate among women (25%)! Depression in men is slowly becoming more recognized, but is often difficult to spot the symptoms even by long-term partners or health professionals. Men exhibit depression differently and the way they cope can often camouflage their state of mind.
Depression in men may always have been far more common than we knew. Depression in men is often masked by high-risk behaviors such as alcohol and drug abuse. Common symptoms among depressed men include feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, irritability, and anger. Depression in men often manifests the same as it does in women, yet men have a tendency to ignore or minimize the symptoms. Chronic sadness or irritability, sleep disturbance, changes in appetite or weight, problems with attention and memory, decreased motivation and suicidal thoughts are all symptoms of depression.
Mental health professionals increasingly acknowledge that men are less likely than women to recognize their depression or admit to feelings that could alert others to their condition. Mental health goes hand in hand with physical health to promote overall health and well-being. But doctors often don’t ask their male patients about sensitive topics, such as personal issues or emotional healthPatients should also be hospitalized if they articulate or display a strong urge to act on suicidal thoughts or if they have a specific suicide plan that is likely to be successful. Typically, such patients require management by a psychiatrist Patients with psychotic depression are seriously ill and will almost always require hospitalisation. Antidepressant therapy alone is unlikely to be effective.
Treatment choice will depend on the patient’s diagnosis, severity of symptoms, and preference. In general, severe depressive illnesses, particularly those that are recurrent, will require a combination of treatments for the best outcome.

Chiropractic in the Treatment and Prevention of Sports Injuries

a randomized clinical trial published last week (8 April, 2010) is an important contribution to chiropractic research literature.  Hoskins and Pollard used two groups of male semi elite Australian Rules football athletes, matched them in several ways and randomly placed them in one of two arms of the study.  All received the usual and customary management and medical care.  Half also received chiropractic care which consisted of both soft tissue and high velocity spinal manipulation.   There research evaluated several outcomes.  When chiropractic care was added to conventional management, there was a significant reduction in lower limb strain injuries, time missed as a result of knee injuries, lower low back pain, and there was improvement in health status.  “In addition, although not statistically significant, there was a trend towards prevention of hamstring and primary non-contact knee injuries and there were no reported adverse outcomes from the intervention.”  The authors do acknowledge the several limitations to their work including the small sample size.  The work is nonetheless an important piece and one of the few where the focus is prevention.

A little knowledge can be a terrible thing

By Harris Meyer, DC

In the article below, Gina Shaw from WebMD lists a variety of health care approaches to address back pain other than drugs and surgery. She lists physical therapy, chiropractic, and acupuncture among others. I am an expert on back health but not specifically on acupuncture or physical therapy so I will refrain from commenting on them…she however did not refrain in areas where her expertise are questionable.

Among the thousands of patients I have seen and the millions that have been seen by chiropractors around the planet, our natural care has yielded remarkable results for both acute and chronic back pain. The biggest problem with this article however is that the author is propogating our "sick care" system mentality. Most of us live by the rules of reaction when it comes to our well being. That is, when something hurts or appears "wrong" with us, we seek medical help or chiropractic help or something similar. So what's wrong with that? Well, you only give yourself an opportunity to deal with the irritating symptoms. In most cases, you or your health care provider are not focused on truly getting rid of the cause of the problem. It's no surprise that because the underlying reasons for the symptoms haven't been taken care of, those symptoms eventually return but the cause has usually worsened.

A statement like the one below about "treating for a month or two" leads people to believe there is science that validates that much care for a given problem. Let me tell you that no two problems are alike. People, circumstances, compliance, etc. are different in every single case. A 16 year old with a new back injury will require much less care than a 45 year old overweight person who has had a problem for some length of time but those are just a couple of factors. If we want to have good health, including a back that feels great, you must look at your lifestyle and understand that you probably will continue to do things that have some negative stress or strain on you and your body. If you accept that truth, it will make sense that regular check ups are necessary to detect those stresses and address them before they cause the symptoms that lead you to get sucked into the "sick care" system. Instead, practicing "health care" or what we might call "wellness care" as I just descibed above, will produce much better results for you.It will save hours, weeks and months of work trying to restore your health and will save money as well.

Hey, it's Earth Day. What a perfect time to think about how you can better care for the planet and think about yourself in the same way!

Alternative Approaches to Low Back Pain

Got back pain? Alternative therapies might help.

Chiropractic/Spinal Manipulation

Doctors of chiropractic use their hands, and sometimes other tools, to manipulate the joints of the body -- particularly the spine -- to help relieve pain.

Studies have shown that chiropractics can be effective in relieving acute (sudden) and chronic back pain, although there's more evidence to support its use in acute back pain.

"Chiropractic is generally considered to be as good as physical therapy, and as good as patient education, in relieving back pain," Moon says. "And, like physical therapists, chiropractors can be very good educators about back health."

Just as with physical therapy, chiropractic care for back pain should involve learning exercises to do at home to strengthen your back, and treatments shouldn't go on forever.

"They should be teaching the patient how to take care of themselves," Moon says. "I won't write an open-ended prescription for chiropractic; generally, I think it should be done for a month or two before re-evaluating how the patient is doing."

Cooking The Health Out Of Food

It's time to get back to basics if you haven't already begun to. In our attempt to sell more products and explode our sensory system with flavor, we have taken foods that were perfect for us in every way and created chemical potions that ever so slowly kill us.This is Earth Week 2010 and a very good time to look closely at the condition of our environment. The planet is in serious peril as is the health of much of its population. Not that it's very practical but imagine if we all walked to work and ate raw fruits, vegetables and nuts all day. Imagine the change in our health and that of the earth.

Following is a worth-while read I caught and wanted to share with you.

See you soon, Dr. Harris Meyer

Reprinted from Bottom Line Secrets, April 6, 2010

"You are what you eat" has been a catch phrase since I was a child... but new research from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City suggests it’s not only what you eat but how hot you cook it that matters. Subjecting certain foods to prolonged high heat -- not only for frying, but also for grilling, roasting, broiling or baking -- creates toxic, inflammatory particles. These, in turn, cause the oxidation and inflammation in the body that are associated with such diseases as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease and others.

Called advanced glycation end products (AGEs), these toxic particles adhere to the arteries, kidneys, brain and joints, where they heighten inflammation. Our typical Western diet, heavy on meat and processed foods and light on plant-based foods, is believed by many scientists to contain at least three times more AGEs than is considered safe.

Good News from this Study

It’s always exciting when research reveals a way to avoid a common health problem -- and this new study does just that. According to the researchers, you can achieve dramatic and quick benefit -- within just days -- by reducing your intake of AGE-containing foods. Doing this decreases the body’s level of inflammation and helps restore its defenses against disease.

The study divided 350-plus participants into three groups -- healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 45... an older healthy group, all past age 60... and nine patients with chronic kidney disease (the kidneys are believed to be especially sensitive to AGEs). Participants were randomly assigned to eat either a regular Western diet in which foods were grilled, fried or baked (in other words, loaded with AGEs) or what the researchers called "the AGE-less diet," which included the same foods, only poached, boiled or steamed so that they contained only about half as many AGEs. The two diets were similar in calories and nutrients. After four months, all participants on the AGE-less diet showed a 60% decline in blood levels of AGEs as well as in several other inflammation markers. According to the study’s lead author, Helen Vlassara, MD, professor and director of the division of experimental diabetes and aging at Mount Sinai, this indicates that your actual chronological age may not be as significant a factor in aging and health as the AGEs in your food. A finding that’s even more impressive: The patients with kidney disease had a similarly substantial reduction after just one month on the AGE-less diet.

The Heat Is On...

I asked Dr. Vlassara to explain to me how the AGEs get into foods. They develop as a chemical reaction when heat is combined with protein and different sugars, she said -- and she noted that meat-rich diets are especially bad, since meats contain high levels of easily oxidizable fat and protein.

There is a third point that is crucial to understand -- which is that removing all visible fat when you cook meats doesn’t solve the problem. All cells in meats contain not only fat and proteins, but also sugars -- some more reactive than others. Therefore, exposure to high heat will still cause AGEs to form in meat at much higher levels than in starch even if you cut away the visible fat. In fact, Dr. Vlassara told me that when you see meat brown while cooking, what you’re witnessing is the rapid reaction among proteins, fats and those reactive sugars to the heat. And, since they are also animal products, when they are cooked, full-fat milk and cheese also develop high levels of AGEs.

Even worse, manufacturers often add AGE-containing flavor-enhancers or coloring (such as caramel) to processed and packaged foods. You may be surprised to learn that a major offender in this category is dark-colored soda. Generally speaking, fast foods and processed/packaged foods also tend to be high in AGEs, which gives us yet another reason to avoid them.

Avoiding AGEs

The good news is, it’s not all that difficult to reduce the amount of AGEs in your diet, Dr. Vlassara said. It just requires making some modest changes in the way you prepare food. Her suggestions...

Meats

*       Marinate in an acid-based mixture (such as vinegar or lemon juice) before cooking, which helps reduce the amount of AGEs produced by heat. Note: Avoid marinades containing sugar, such as most barbecue and teriyaki sauces.

*       Aim to serve meats rare to medium rare if possible -- for instance, cooking pork to just beyond pink. This is admittedly a balancing act -- you want to cook as briefly as possible to minimize development of AGEs, but undercooking carries its own set of dangers.

*       To achieve a brown finish to meats, Dr. Vlassara suggests cooking on your stovetop with a cover to conserve moisture, and then placing the meat under the broiler for just a few minutes at the end.

*       Use as little fat as possible -- as Dr. Vlassara points out, even healthy olive oil oxidizes at high heat.

*       Water inhibits the formation of AGEs, so poaching, stewing, steaming or even boiling proteins is best (including fish and eggs).

Dairy and Other Foods

*       Avoid bringing dairy products to high temperatures -- for instance, when using milk in sauces or when melting cheese under a broiler. Dr. Vlassara said the less time these foods cook, the better. She added that lower temperatures are preferable, as is increased distance from the heat source.

*       Brief microwaving produces a lower level of AGEs than broiling, grilling or stovetop cooking, so this is a great way to cook liquids.

*       Plant-based proteins also create dangerous levels of AGEs when subject to very high heat for long periods -- so be aware that there are dangers to even seemingly healthy foods like broiled tofu or roasted nuts.

what about restaurant food?

Fortunately, the increasingly popular Mediterranean Diet uses lots of foods with low AGEs (including fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains), so it once again ranks among the healthiest ways that you can eat. This not only provides a good framework for eating at home, it also suggests a wide variety of delicious, healthful, low-AGE dishes that you can order in restaurants. But Dr. Vlassara noted that cooking even these foods at high heat with low hydration is problematic, so there’s no way around it -- cooking at high temperatures is not so hot for your health.

Kids are vitamin D Deficient, Not Vaccine Deficient

Written by Jane Sheppard

Thursday, 01 April 2010 16:13

It's exciting to see scientific research confirming what I've believed all along - that our natural environment gives us everything we need to live healthy lives. We are meant to co-exist with the constant circulation of bacteria and viruses in our environment because our extraordinary bodies are designed with a powerful innate immune function. We don't need to mess with this perfection using synthetic drugs and vaccines; we just need to better understand it and take steps to optimize this phenomenal potential.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial of school children shows vitamin D prevents the flu. They also found that asthmatic children on placebo had six times more asthma attacks than did children on vitamin D.

The study was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition:
http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/ajcn.2009.29094v1

Vitamin D Triggers and Activates the Immune System

In addition, scientists have discovered that Vitamin D is crucial to activating the immune response. Without sufficient levels of vitamin D, the killer cells of the immune system - T cells - are not able to fight off serious infections.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7379094/Vitamin-D-triggers-and-arms-the-immune-system.html

That vitamin D increases immune function is not a new discovery. The connection between vitamin D, infections, and immune function has been evident for many years. Here is some of the research:

http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/science/research/vitamin-d-and-influenza.shtml

Are Flu Vaccines as Safe and Effective as Vitamin D?

An independent analysis of worldwide flu vaccine studies published in the British Medical Journal concluded there is little scientific proof that flu vaccines are safe and effective. The report concluded that too few clinical trials have been conducted to prove vaccine safety and current evidence indicates that use of flu vaccine has only a modest or no effect on preventing influenza in the children and the elderly.

http://www.healthychild.com/flu-vaccine/studies-fail-to-demonstrate-safety-or-effectiveness-of-influenza-vaccine-in-children-and-adults/

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/333/7574/912

Our children's bodies have no inherent physiological requirement for repeated injections of live or killed viruses or bacteria mixed with toxic preservatives and adjuvants. They can live remarkably healthy lives without vaccines. But they cannot be healthy without adequate levels of naturally-occurring vitamin D.

The body manufactures the perfect amount of natural vitamin D3 when exposed to sunlight. It's absorbed by our skin and then converted to a hormone that is needed for many different functions, including activating our natural immunity against disease. This happens with zero side effects since it's the way our body is designed to function. And it even has its own built-in mechanism to stop making vitamin D to prevent toxicity.

Compare this with a vaccine made of toxic synthetic substances that is injected directly into the muscle and then taken into the bloodstream. Our bodies were never meant to deal with this type of assault, especially small, developing infant bodies. No wonder there are so many adverse effects with vaccines. Vaccines are incompatible with our bodies' natural processes. Side effects or bad reactions may show up when synthetic substances not meant to be injected, absorbed, or ingested by the human body are forced into the system anyway. The body then has to deal with this.

Vitamin D has always been provided by the sun, but science is just now beginning to affirm the profound effects this has on our bodies. For many years, we've been told to block the sun with chemical sunscreens. It seems that we've been blocking our most effective means of preventing and healing disease.

It's estimated that over half the people in the US are vitamin D deficient. Kids are vitamin D deficient because of the very low government nutritional recommendations of 200-400 IUs, which are ridiculously low, and the insane practice of slathering sunscreen on them all day every day in the summer months. Many doctors are now in agreement that vitamin D levels should be above 50 ng/ml year-round, in both children and adults. You simply can't get there with the current recommendations.

See info about toxicity of sunscreens and how to get enough sun to produce vitamin D without burning.

When the body is nurtured and fed properly, its natural innate immunity is capable of producing a full, complete, powerful immune response. This is always better than simply creating an antibody response, which is all vaccines are meant to do. And now it seems that without adequate vitamin D to activate an immune response, a vaccine may be useless!

We Need a Change in Public Health Policy

There's no real health care reform until public health policy changes to recommend what works instead of what brings in more profits for the pharmaceutical industry.

If our government is serious about public health and well-being, they should reconsider the strategy of recommending an expensive pharmaceutical-based, questionable mode of prevention that has associated health risks when a natural, inexpensive, no-risk preventive has been proven effective.

In the meantime, we parents can implement our own health care reform and provide our babies and children with optimal vitamin D levels, extended breastfeeding, good whole foods nutrition, a positive emotional and non-toxic environment, as well as other natural immune enhancers to keep our kids safe and healthy.

Study says active kids gain good social skills

Health notes: Study says active kids gain good social skills

By The Grand Rapids Press staff

April 06, 2010, 4:11AM

Middle school children who are physically active are more likely to demonstrate good social skills, such as leadership and empathy, which can influence healthy behaviors.

The University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center study concludes fostering leadership skills and empathy in children may reinforce healthy lifestyle behaviors. Reports of activity and participation in team sports were looked at in kids where leadership and empathy developed.

It appears physical activity through team sports and exercise classes suggest children who develop leadership and empathy toward others are more likely to care about their own health, perhaps adopting lifelong healthy behaviors that can prevent heart disease.
