New Research on Best Meals to Eat After Exercise

This study is so important and so valuable in the on-going battle to understand why we gain weight, lose muscle, risk diabetic onset, and more.

Energy deficit after exercise augments lipid mobilization but does not contribute to the exercise-induced increase in insulin sensitivity

The entire study can be read at: Articles in PresS. J Appl Physiol (December 31, 2009). doi:10.1152/japplphysiol.01106.2009

The primary aim of this study was to compare the effects of exercise-induced energy deficits. The findings of this study confirm previous work demonstrating that consuming low carbohydrate content in meals after exercise prevents the restoration of muscle glycogen concentration the next morning, and significantly increased insulin sensitivity the next day.

Generally speaking, after exercise your body is nitrogen-poor and your muscles have been broken down. That’s why you need amino acids from high quality animal proteins like humanely raised organic free range chicken, grass fed beef and eggs, as well as vegetable carbohydrates.

It’s important to combine a quality protein and a carb (veggie type) together in every meal, no matter whether it’s a resistance training day, an interval cardio day, or a non-workout day.

We have been educating people about carbohydrate balance for many years and it’s wonderful to see research of this kind being done and published. If we can help you with your dietary approach, please contact us.

Asthma symptom relief with chiropractic care

Asthma and Chiropractic Care (Especially for Children)

Asthma is a major medical problem for children and adults more so than ever before. In the last twenty years asthma has more than doubled and millions suffer from it. Asthma is a chronic lung disease which is responsible for the inflammation and narrowing of the airways. The most common symptoms a child with asthma will display are wheezing, tightness in the chest, coughing and shortness of breath. This inability to breathe freely can be frightening for a child and for the parent who has to help. It can be equally frightening and dangerous for adults as well. There are a wide range of reasons for this uptick in asthma diagnosis’s including heredity and environmental factors.

A diagnosis of asthma can not only be scary for a family, but costly as well. Typically, medical treatments involve inhalers, nebulizers, steroids, and other medications. Even with insurance, none of these options are cheap. The cost is also one that accrues over time due to the fact that these medical treatments only treat the symptoms and do not cure asthma. For some, these expensive treatments must be used over the course of a lifetime.

Aside from the astounding cost factors, there are other issues with using these medical treatments alone to treat childhood asthma. Prolonged steroid treatment and other medications can have side effects that many [families] would rather avoid.  Some of the more common side effects for some asthma medications include sleep disruption and hyperactivity.

For some cases, going to a chiropractor  may provide a safe, natural and drug free approach that works to treat asthma. I have clinically observed that childhood asthma is responsive more often than in the adult population. A chiropractor can help determine if subluxation, which is a misalignment of the bones in the spine which irritates nerves, is the cause of the child’s asthma. The lungs and diaphragm are responsible for breathing and their ability to function correctly is controlled by the nervous system. If there is irritation or interference of the nervous system, the lungs simply can’t function optimally. Chiropractic adjustments can alleviate any pressure or stress that the nervous system is under in most cases. Once this is relieved, the lungs are fully capable of doing their job and incidents of asthma can be reduced if not eliminated altogether.

Chiropractic care which results in more efficiency of the nervous system overall also boosts the natural workings of the immune system and can help asthma sufferers maintain consistent good health. This is particularly important for children who have asthma as they are more prone to attacks when they have a cold or something more serious such as a respiratory infection.

While chiropractic care cannot end all incidents of childhood asthma, regular adjustments have provided some children and even some adults with a gradual improvement in their asthma. There have been a number of studies conducted in the past few years which examine the effectiveness of the chiropractic adjustment as an alternative asthma treatment and the results have been encouraging. One study of children 6 to 17 with asthma who had a three month course of chiropractic care in conjunction with medical care rated their quality of life as higher and also experienced less severe episodes of asthma attacks. There have also been cases in which children have been able to stop all medications and experience few if any attacks after a regimen of chiropractic care.

A chiropractor may be able to provide a safer and more natural way to deal with childhood asthma. Even if they are not able to fully eliminate the attacks, a reduction in severity and frequency without potentially harmful medications is certainly an alternative worth exploring for any child afflicted with asthma.

In my own practice, I have seen individuals suffering with asthma get great relief with chiropractic care.  For some of them, it did reduce the frequency and severity and in others it completely eliminated the attacks.  I have found the sooner they get chiropractic care, the better results we achieve.  Remember, the earlier you start anything, the sooner and often longer-lasting, and more pronounced will be the results.

Just have to share this before I can go to sleep

So it's about 11:20pm and I bet hardly anyone will ever read this partly because it will be way below plenty of other posts come tomorrow morning when people sit at their desk with their morning tea, coffee, or what ever.

Well I got a call today from the "wonderful" folks at a prevalent insurance company who wanted to make sure I understand and adhere to their guidelines since I am in their network. I happen to be in virtually every PPO/POS network and even most of the heavy-hitting HMOs, but I wouldn't say I want to be best friends with any of them.

So the ins. rep (another chiro) explains what I've heard, read, been inundated with for at least 3-4 years now. It's that the average patient (yeah, you must be average. you're certainly not an individual!) gets out of substantial pain within 2-4 weeks of care at which time I, the treating doctor have 3 choices.

   1. Discharge the patient who may return if and when they have a "substantial flare up" of the problem.

   2. Provide maintenance care for the patient on a cash basis...not using insurance.

   3. Provide corrective care for the patient on a cash basis...not using insurance.

Just because I wanted to feel nauseous today I told him I wanted to be totally clear. I said, "so you only cover people in nearly severe or worse pain and as soon as their symptoms stabilize, you won't cover them any more, correct?" He says yes, that's exactly right. So I further clarify by asking, "and if the patient wants to try to correct the cause of their problem or prevent worsening, you will not cover that care and it is the patients responsibility to pay themselves?" I got the same response..."yes, that's exactly right." Does this just make you sick?

I don't know why I bothered to write this. It certainly won't make anyone reading it feel good. I'm sorry for being selfish and needing to blurt this out only so I won't suffer over this alone. You don't deserve it. Nor do I as a consumer and member of one of these all powerful insurance behemoths. Well, I think I can sleep now and hope you can too.

Risk of Stroke: Chiropractic vs. Primary Medical Care

A very nice gentleman who stands to improve his arthritic prognosis was too frightened this morning to get an adjustment because he's heard it could give him a stroke. I felt it was neces sary to post this to put the minds of others at ease over this concern.

–Dr. Harris Meyer

Risk of Stroke and Chiropractic Care: Results of a Population-Based Case-Control and Case-Crossover Study

Conclusion

VBA stroke is a very rare event in the population. The increased risks of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic and PCP visits is likely due to patients with headache and neck pain from VBA dissection seeking care before their stroke. We found no evidence of excess risk of VBA stroke associated chiropractic care compared to primary care.
